Six of Nigeria’s main opposition political parties have agreed to launch structured negotiations to build a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Representatives from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP) decided during a summit of party leaders in the capital, Abuja, on Monday.
Delegates at the meeting resolved to work together on critical national issues, including widespread insecurity and the rising cost of living.
Under the agreement, the parties have established three joint coalition organs to handle leadership, publicity, and legal strategy. Five specialized working groups have also been given a four-week deadline to draft key framework documents, including a proposal for opposition unity, a national reform policy, and a roadmap toward selecting a single presidential candidate.
In a joint communiqué, the coalition also urged authorities in the United States to process and release official records concerning Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, which are currently subject to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) proceedings in Washington.
