Nigeria and Thailand have agreed to deepen economic, security, and agricultural cooperation following inaugural bilateral talks in Abuja.
The diplomatic summit was led by Ambassador Grema Garba of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Thai Deputy Permanent Secretary Sirilak Nyom on Monday, 24 August 2026, operationalizing a bilateral consultation framework established in 2023.
Key Outcomes and Strategic Focus Areas
The high-level talks focused on expanding market access between West Africa and Southeast Asia while addressing shared security challenges:
- Trade and Agriculture: Nigeria called for Thai investment in local value chains, targeting technical transfer in rice production, cassava processing, aquaculture, and farm machinery. Both nations also agreed to reactivate a Joint Trade Committee.
- Security and Anti-Narcotics Cooperation: Officials committed to stepping up intelligence sharing to combat transnational crime, human trafficking, and drug smuggling. Thailand highlighted ongoing joint efforts with Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and proposed a new anti-narcotics memorandum alongside access to its SHIELD anti-scam database.
- Consular and Visa Reforms: Nigerian delegates pressed for streamlined, transparent visa processing for investors, students, and tourists traveling to Thailand, while both sides discussed formalizing prisoner-transfer and migration arrangements.
- Technical Assistance: Through the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), Thailand will extend scholarships and capacity-building programs in climate resilience, digital technology, and renewable energy to Nigerian professionals.
- Global Governance: Both nations reaffirmed support for multilateralism and called for comprehensive UN Security Council reforms to secure permanent representation for African nations.
Thailand is set to host the second round of bilateral consultations in Bangkok on a mutually agreed date.
