A suspected vandal has been crushed to death under a collapsed 330kV transmission tower in Delta State, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The incident was discovered on Saturday, 8 August 2026, during a line patrol by engineers tracing an automatic tripping fault along the Ughelli-Benin 330kV transmission line.
Patrol teams identified the fault at Tower 101, which had collapsed after its structural components were tampered with. The victim’s body was found pinned beneath the fallen metal framework.
A subsequent inspection revealed that Tower 101 on an adjacent 330kV line connecting Ughelli to Sapele had also suffered severe vandalism, though the structure remained standing.
Condemning the incident, TCN management described the death as a stark warning about the hazards of tampering with high-voltage electrical infrastructure.
The company urged host communities and the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity around power installations to security agencies, stressing that protecting national grid infrastructure is essential to preventing widespread blackouts and loss of life.
