ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria’s military authorities have announced the death of a retired major general who was killed while being held by captors following his abduction.
Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former top spokesperson for the Armed Forces of Nigeria, died in captivity after a kidnapping, Defence Headquarters confirmed in a statement on Saturday.
The military said it had previously withheld public comment on the abduction to avoid jeopardizing rescue operations carried out alongside other security agencies.
“Every operational resource was deployed in the hope of securing his safe return,” said Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information.
Major General Abubakar had a long career in the military, notably serving as the public face of the armed forces as Director of Defence Information, as well as leading public relations for various other military formations. The military high command credited him with making significant contributions to Nigeria’s ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
In response to a recent wave of kidnappings across the country, including the incident that led to General Abubakar’s death, military officials stated that ongoing operations have been intensified.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to tracking down the perpetrators, dismantling criminal networks, and restoring security across the West African nation.
