INEC Finalizes Security, BVAS Readiness Ahead of Ekiti Governorship Election

ADO-EKITI, Nigeria — Extensive security measures have been implemented ahead of the Ekiti State governorship election on June 20 to ensure a peaceful and credible vote, Nigeria’s electoral umpire has announced.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, gave the assurance during a mock accreditation exercise in the state capital, Ado-Ekiti, where officials tested the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

Security personnel are being drafted from across the country to designated flashpoints to protect voters, polling staff, and electoral materials. Professor Amupitan stated that the commission, working in tandem with national security agencies, had mapped out high-risk areas to pre-empt any potential breach of the peace.

The deployment comes amid heightened scrutiny over electoral integrity and logistical readiness in off-cycle gubernatorial polls.

Technological Safeguards

During the mock exercise, the INEC chief expressed satisfaction with the performance of the BVAS technology, noting that voter verification was completed within seconds. He added that the system successfully flagged individuals attempting to undergo accreditation outside their designated polling stations.

Crucially, the technology has been updated with safeguards to prevent manipulation. According to Professor Amupitan, the system now makes it impossible for presiding officers to upload results to the central viewing portal that do not match the physical figures recorded on official result sheets.

Addressing concerns over potential delays and long queues in densely populated areas, the chairman said polling units had been split and deployment protocols optimized to guarantee a seamless voting process.

Logistics Finalized

In terms of election logistics, INEC confirmed that all non-sensitive materials have already been batched and distributed to local government areas, with electoral officers across Ekiti reporting full readiness.

The commission stated it expects voting to commence exactly as scheduled across the state next Saturday.

With security cordons tightening and the core electoral technology certified, officials say the framework is now in place to deliver a transparent election that protects both the ballot and public confidence.
