Tehran sets July burial date for former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

TEHRAN — Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, is scheduled to be buried on 9 July following months of delay caused by the ongoing conflict, Iranian state television reported on Saturday.

Mr. Khamenei was killed on 28 February in a military strike that Tehran attributes to Israel and the United States.

The burial will take place in his northeastern hometown, the holy city of Mashhad. The ceremony was originally planned for March but was postponed due to the outbreak of war.

According to state media, the burial will be preceded by a three-day national funeral procession beginning in the capital, Tehran, on 4 July. A subsequent ceremony is scheduled to take place in the holy city of Qom on 7 July.

The commencement of the national funeral on 4 July coincides with the United States’ Independence Day, which marks its 250th anniversary this year.

Mr. Khamenei has been succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who was appointed as Iran’s third Supreme Leader since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The new leader, who was reportedly wounded in the same strikes that killed his father and several senior officials, has not made a public appearance since taking office. He continues to communicate exclusively through official statements issued in his name.
