LAGOS, Nigeria — Operatives from Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted shipments of high-potency synthetic drugs smuggled from Europe inside household water purification machines.
The discovery at a courier firm in Lagos is part of a broader, nationwide crackdown over the past week that has netted over 1,700 kilograms of illicit substances, a cache of military-grade ammunition, and led to the arrest of multiple suspects, including a married couple.
The European Concealment Plot
The European drug trail was disrupted on Tuesday, 26 May 2026 when narcotics agents inspected a freight consignment arriving from the Netherlands at a logistics firm in Lagos.
A detailed physical search of the imported water purifiers revealed deep-concealment chambers packed with synthetic narcotics. Officers recovered 3 kilograms of ketamine alongside 199 grams of MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy pills.

Ammunition on the Highway and a Married Couple Arrested
Parallel operations across northern and eastern transport corridors have exposed the overlap between narcotics distribution and the logistics of regional insecurity:
- The Kaduna Highway Intercept: On Sunday, 24 May 2026, NDLEA highway patrol teams along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway at Jere stopped a 30-year-old suspect, Sunusi Musa. A search revealed 380 rounds of RLA 7.62mm military-grade ammunition bound for Katsina State. The suspect and live ammunition have been transferred to military and police authorities for further investigation.
- The Gonin Gora Raid: On the same day, anti-narcotics agents raided a residence in the Gonin Gora district of Kaduna. A married couple, Musa and Mercy Sunday, alongside a 38-year-old woman, Salomi Ezekiel, were arrested following the discovery of 100 jumbo bags of ‘skunk’ (high-strain cannabis) weighing 1,246 kilograms.
- The Niger Warehouse Raid: Acting on intelligence, agents in Niger State targeted a logistics hub in Gidan Kukah, Bosso Local Government Area, on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. They seized 457 kilograms of skunk and subsequently arrested 46-year-old Godwin Zakka at his residence in Minna.
- The Enugu Interdiction: On Thursday, 28 May 2026, an Enugu-bound commercial transit vehicle heading toward Taraba State was intercepted along the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway. A search of the vehicle yielded 22,000 tramadol pills, 100 ampoules of pentazocine, and 200 grams of bromazepam. The courier, James Maigari Wisdom, was taken into custody.

The ‘War Against Drug Abuse’
The NDLEA confirmed that alongside these tactical interdictions, its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) Directorate has continued its grassroots sensitization campaigns across the federation.
Educational and community advocacy lectures were held over the past week at several institutions, including Government Secondary School in Adiabo, Cross River State; St Patrick’s Memorial College in Wukari, Taraba State; and schools across Lagos and Anambra states.
Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, commended the operational commands for maintaining an aggressive stance against drug supply networks while balancing enforcement with public education. He urged personnel across the country to intensify surveillance along known trafficking corridors.
