Eight children have been killed in a series of shootings in the US city of Shreveport, Louisiana, in what local authorities are describing as the most tragic event in the city’s history.

The victims, ranging in age from just one to 14 years old, were discovered by officers early on Sunday morning. Police say a lone gunman opened fire at three separate locations before being chased and killed by officers as he attempted to flee in a carjacked vehicle.

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux said the “domestic disturbance” has left the entire community in mourning. “This is a tragic situation—maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had in Shreveport,” he added.

A ‘Domestic’ Rampage

The violence began at approximately 05:00 local time (10:00 BST). Police Corporal Chris Bordelon confirmed that the shootings took place at two residences on the same block and a third location in a nearby neighbourhood.

While the gunman has not been formally identified, investigators believe some of the children were related to him. Ten people in total were shot during the rampage, with all eight fatalities confirmed to be juveniles.
