Nigeria’s Grassroots Health Drive: N98bn Funding Boost to Target 13,500 Centres

ABUJA — A major financial injection into Nigeria’s primary healthcare system is set to transform medical access for millions of people in rural and underserved communities, according to a prominent policy advocacy group. The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) highlighted that the federal government’s disbursement of N98 billion (£48m / $61m) into 13,500 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) nationwide marks a turning point for the country’s local health infrastructure.

A ‘Cornerstone’ of Development

In a statement signed by Chairman Chukwudi Enekwechi and Secretary Segun Ogedengbe, the group argued that the funding—one of the largest single-year investments in grassroots health in recent history—proves that rural healthcare remains a priority for the current administration.

The group noted that the strategy is designed to link health outcomes directly to national productivity and economic growth.”The investment is aimed at deepening access to quality healthcare in rural areas… making the health sector a cornerstone of national development,” the statement noted.

Modernising the Frontline

The funding is already yielding tangible results on the ground. According to data shared at the recent National Health Convention in Abuja, the initiative has already facilitated:2,565 centres upgraded to modern standards; 1,456 centres currently undergoing renovation and 5,212 additional facilities slated to be brought into the scheme to expand the network.

Strengthening the Grassroot

For decades, Nigeria’s healthcare system has faced criticism for being top-heavy, with central hospitals overstretched while local clinics languished. This deliberate shift toward “grassroots health delivery” is expected to alleviate pressure on urban teaching hospitals. TMV remains convinced that by strengthening these rural institutions, the government is not only improving health but also empowering the local populace to be more economically productive.
