Abuja, Nigeria — Reverend Dr. Uma Ukpai, a prominent Nigerian evangelist and the spiritual leader of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, has died at the age of 80.
The news of his death was confirmed in a statement released by his family on Monday, who announced that he passed away on October 6, 2025.
Dr. Ukpai was widely known across Nigeria and the global Christian community as a “spiritual general,” having dedicated over six decades to evangelism, teaching, and ministry. His dynamic ministry and evangelistic campaigns reportedly impacted millions of lives, fostering spiritual growth across generations.
The family described his passing as a “glorious transition” from a life of devoted service, highlighting his dedication as a “faithful soldier of the cross.”
“His teachings, prophetic insights, and mentorship have left a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire believers for years to come,” the family statement read.
Tributes have poured in from political and spiritual leaders, including Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, former Presidential candidate Peter Obi, and President Bola Tinubu, who described him as a “towering figure” and “God’s general.”
Beyond his spiritual work, Dr. Ukpai was celebrated as a devoted family man and mentor. His ministry leaves behind a significant spiritual and social legacy, which includes churches, educational initiatives, and humanitarian efforts that continue to operate globally.
The family stated that while they mourn his physical absence, they “rejoice that he has finished his race” and assured the public that details of his burial arrangements would be shared in due course.
