End of an Era: Professor Mahmood Yakubu Concludes Tenure as INEC Chairman

Professor Mahmood Yakubu has concluded his two-term tenure and stepped down as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). His departure, which marks the completion of a full ten-year cycle (having been first appointed in November 2015), comes ahead of the official end of his second term in December 2025. This makes him the first INEC Chairman to serve two full terms since the commission’s inception.

Interim Leadership and The Handover

Effective immediately, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, a highly respected legal professional and one of the longest-serving National Commissioners, has taken charge of the commission in an Acting capacity. She is also known for her role as the head of the Legal Services, Clearance & Complaints Committee (LSCCC) at INEC. The announcement was reportedly a surprise to many, delivered during an emotional meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Elections and Innovations Under Yakubu

Professor Yakubu’s tenure was marked by the successful organization of two pivotal general elections and significant technological advancements in Nigeria’s electoral landscape.

In an emotional and gratitude-laden speech, the former Chairman thanked all staff, particularly the Resident Electoral Commissioners, for their unwavering dedication and commitment to their work throughout his decade-long stewardship of the nation’s electoral body.
