Police rescue abandoned newborn in Abuja as authorities issue public appeal

Police in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have rescued an abandoned newborn boy discovered inside a plastic bag in the Bwari Area Council of Abuja.

The baby was found on Monday, 2 November 2026, in critical condition with visible injuries to his hand and arm, according to police officials. He was immediately transported to a medical facility for urgent care.

Confirming the rescue in a video statement released on Tuesday, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Josephine Adeh, appealed to the public for information to help trace the child’s mother.

“We picked this baby up in a very bad condition… The baby boy was abandoned, wrapped in a nylon bag, and he was badly injured,” SP Adeh said. She added that once the infant is fully stabilized by medical staff, he will be transferred to social welfare authorities.

Appeals for public assistance and safe surrender

Police have urged Bwari residents to report any relevant information, particularly concerning individuals who were recently pregnant but are no longer seen with a newborn.

Addressing women experiencing unwanted pregnancies or severe distress, the police spokesperson urged mothers to seek official support rather than abandoning infants in life-threatening conditions.

“If you do not want the baby, you can walk into the social welfare office or any nearest police station and we will assist you,” SP Adeh said, emphasizing that social services and adoption frameworks exist to care for vulnerable children.

The incident marks the third abandoned infant rescued by FCT police officers in recent weeks, following similar recoveries in the Kurudu and Gwagwalada suburbs of Abuja in September.
