Parts of south-east Nigeria face temporary power cuts from Thursday for grid upgrades.

The state-backed Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that a six-day maintenance window—running from 5 to 10 November—is required to test and pre-commission a new Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system at the Nsukka–New Haven 132kV transmission substation.

SCADA technology allows grid operators to monitor and manage power infrastructure remotely, a key step in improving grid reliability across the region. To minimize disruption, authorities state the planned outages will be executed in phases across a four-day testing period rather than a continuous blackout. Electricity distribution to unaffected areas will remain operational.

Areas Affected and Schedule

Affected Regions: Major installations and residential areas dependent on the Nsukka 132kV substation will experience interruptions, including the University of Nigeria, Nsukka campus, alongside communities connected to the Orba and Sumas 33kV distribution feeders.

Service Suspensions: Local distributor MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) will be unable to supply power to customers on these feeders during active testing hours.

Work Breaks: Operations will be paused on Sunday, 8 November and Tuesday, 10 November, with normal bulk power delivery temporarily restored on those days.

TCN expressed regret for the disruption, noting that the temporary outages are necessary to integrate updated modern control systems into the national grid framework.
