President Bola Tinubu has extended his working vacation in Europe by a few days and is expected to return to Nigeria at the weekend, the Presidency announced on Monday.
President Tinubu departed Nigeria on 30 August for London before travelling to Paris, France, where he held meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron and business leaders.
In a statement issued on 21 September, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga stated that the President remains in active communication with officials and continues to direct state affairs. The Presidency cited recent executive directives issued from abroad, including ordering an independent probe into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in custody in Minna, Niger State.
With Vice President Kashim Shettima currently in New York representing Nigeria at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume continues to represent the presidency at official domestic events.
The extension has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leader and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who raised constitutional concerns regarding the exercise of executive power during the President’s prolonged absence.
