ABUJA — Nigeria’s free trade zones regulator has threatened legal action against operators illegally importing containers, warning that illicit trade threatens to undermine the country’s economic stability.
Dr Olufemi Ogunyemi, Managing Director of the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), announced immediate enforcement measures on Tuesday following growing allegations of regulatory breaches across the designated business hubs.
”Operators who circumvent lawful import and export procedures, mis-declare goods, or attempt to move containers through unauthorised channels should be in no doubt that such conduct will be identified and met with decisive regulatory action,” Dr Ogunyemi said in a statement released in Abuja.
The crackdown will include stricter documentation checks, intensified site inspections, and joint enforcement operations with security and customs agencies.
Nigeria’s Free Trade Zones (FTZs) were established to attract foreign direct investment, boost manufacturing, and drive export-led growth by offering businesses tax incentives and streamlined customs procedures. However, regulatory authorities have faced mounting challenges in preventing the abuse of these tax-free spaces for smuggling and tax evasion.
Despite the clampdown, the agency stressed that compliant businesses would not be disrupted, noting that the overwhelming majority of zone operators act legally and contribute significantly to government revenues.
Dr. Ogunyemi urged the trade zone association to self-police, warning that the actions of a “small minority” must not be allowed to discredit the legitimate economic achievements of compliant firms.
