Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has arrived in São Tomé to represent President Bola Tinubu at the inauguration of President Carlos Manuel Vila Nova.
Mr. Vila Nova will be sworn in for a second five-year term on Thursday, 3 September, at the Assembleia Nacional in the capital, following his victory in the presidential election held on 19 July.

The Ministry of Defence said Mr. Matawalle’s presence reflects Nigeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with the island nation and supporting democratic governance and maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
During his visit, the minister is scheduled to deliver a personal message from President Tinubu and meet with São Toméan officials to discuss regional defence cooperation and counter-piracy efforts in shared waters.
