Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to the United Nations, describing the world body as a vital strategic partner in humanitarian aid, development, and regional peacebuilding.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, gave the assurance on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the outgoing UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, in Abuja.
Ambassador Enikanolaiye commended the UN for its sustained support across vulnerable communities, while acknowledging a broader strategic shift within the multilateral organization.
Push for private sector funding
Addressing the impact of shrinking international aid budgets, the minister called for alternative financing models to sustain humanitarian and development projects.
“For us as a country, we value our relationship with the United Nations,” Ambassador Enikanolaiye said. “On the challenge of dwindling resources, we must embrace innovative thinking, including stronger partnerships with the private sector, to mobilize alternative funding.”
Mr. Fall, who is set to complete his tour of duty in Nigeria later this year after nearly a decade in the country, praised Nigeria’s historic contributions to international peacekeeping, highlighting its past leadership in West Africa through the ECOMOG regional force.
