Civil Society Coalition Commends INEC Over Osun Governorship Poll

A coalition of civil society organisations, opposition political parties, and ethnic nationality groups has expressed confidence in Professor Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the recent Osun State governorship election.

The coalition, led by Obed Agu, National Organising Secretary of the Action Peoples Party, made its stance known during a delegation visit to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Assessment and Benchmark for 2027

Speaking during the visit, Agu noted that the group conducted a two-day post-election review evaluating pre-election logistics, voting-day conduct, security, and real-time result uploads to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

Key points highlighted by the coalition include:

  • Electoral Performance: The group cited voter turnout exceeding 40% and prompt digital transmission of polling unit results as indicators of improved credibility.
  • Institutional Standards: The coalition urged the commission to maintain these operational standards and ensure equal treatment for all political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
  • Security and Neutrality: The group commended security agencies and the presidency for enabling a peaceful environment, stressing that state institutions must maintain strict neutrality in future contests.

INEC Response

National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna received the coalition on behalf of the INEC Chairman. Mr.Haruna stated that the successful management of the Osun poll aligns with the commission’s commitment to incremental improvement across successive elections. He assured the delegation that feedback from civil society would inform preparations for upcoming off-cycle polls and the 2027 general elections.
