Arsenal teammates Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard will put their club friendship aside on Saturday as England face Norway in a highly anticipated World Cup quarter-final.
The two 27-year-old midfielders were instrumental in Arsenal’s recent historic Premier League title victory—the club’s first in 22 years—as well as their run to the UEFA Champions League final.
Now, they find themselves on opposite sides in a crucial knockout match that will guarantee one of them a place in the World Cup semi-finals.
Norway captain Odegaard has been one of the standout players of the tournament, providing three assists so far. According to data released by world football’s governing body, FIFA, his work rate has been unmatched within the Norwegian squad, with 229 sprints recorded during the tournament.
Speaking previously about Odegaard’s leadership, England’s Rice praised his club captain. “He’s got the full respect of the dressing room, the way he demands, the way he drives the team,” Rice said. “He’s been amazing for us.”
However, Rice will be the man tasked with stopping his friend on Saturday. Operating as England’s defensive anchor under manager Thomas Tuchel, Rice has achieved a 91% pass completion rate while providing vital cover for the defence.
Tuchel spoke warmly of his midfielder ahead of the clash, describing him as “one of the very best midfielders in the world” and a “selfless team player.”
Odegaard was equally complimentary of his Premier League teammate, describing Rice as a “complete player” who brings relentless energy to the pitch. “He can defend, he can attack, he can be physical… it’s going to be a good test for all of us,” the Norwegian captain said.
The match carries immense historical weight for both nations. England are aiming to lift the World Cup for the first time since 1966, while Norway are already celebrating their best-ever World Cup performance after reaching the last eight for the first time in their history.
