INEC Chairman Leads Delegation to South Korea for International Election Observation

SEOUL, South Korea — The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, has led a high-powered Nigerian delegation to the Republic of Korea to participate in the International Election Observation Programme (IEOP).

The delegation is in East Asia to observe South Korea’s nationwide simultaneous local elections, which are scheduled to run from 29 May to 5 June 2026.

Organised by the National Election Commission (NEC) of South Korea, the international observation programme was formally opened on Saturday, 30 May 2026, in the capital, Seoul. The event has brought together election management bodies, senior experts, and international observers from around the globe to exchange technical knowledge and monitor the conduct of local government polls.

Firsthand Inspection of Early Voting

Professor Amupitan is accompanied on the diplomatic and technical mission by a senior team from the Commission, including:

  • Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu, National Commissioner;
  • Professor Dimis Mai-Lafia, Chief Technical Adviser to the Chairman;
  • Dr Binta Kasim Mohammed, Director of Training.

As part of their itinerary on the programme’s opening day, the INEC team visited a polling centre in the Mia-dong neighbourhood of Gangbuk-gu, Seoul.

The delegation observed early voting operations in real-time, gaining firsthand insights into South Korea’s highly regarded electoral infrastructure, administrative workflows, and voter processing procedures.

Deepening Electoral Governance

The Commission’s participation in the South Korean local elections comes at a time when the administration of sub-national and local government elections remains a key focal point of democratic development.

According to officials, the study tour and observation mission are expected to significantly deepen INEC’s understanding of emerging global trends, technological integration, and best practices in electoral governance.

The insights gathered from Seoul are intended to inform ongoing reforms and strengthen Nigeria’s domestic democratic institutions as the Commission continues to refine its own election management frameworks.
