Dangote Truck Crashes Plunge by 56% Following Joint Road Safety Reforms

ABUJA, Nigeria — One of Africa’s largest conglomerates, the Dangote Group, has reported a historic 56% decline in road traffic crashes across its nationwide haulage fleet following a comprehensive safety intervention by Nigeria’s highway regulatory body.

The sharp reduction in accidents comes after the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) conducted a rigorous Safety System Gap Analysis on Dangote Cement Transport operations in September 2025.

During an appreciation visit to the FRSC National Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, the Head of Transport for the Dangote Group, Mr Murillo Silva, commended the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, for the strategic reforms that have reshaped the company’s logistical operations. Mr Silva stated that the ongoing partnership had “repositioned the Dangote fleet towards becoming a model for fleet management and road safety compliance across the continent.”

Identifying Critical Flaws

The initial FRSC investigation into the conglomerate’s transport network had exposed several systemic operational vulnerabilities.

The audit revealed that high crash frequencies were overwhelmingly linked to human error and inadequate oversight, identifying:

  • Speeding: Widespread violations and tampering with speed limiter devices.
  • Fatigue: Poor driver rest management schedules, leading to exhaustion on long-haul routes.
  • Cargo Controls: Chronic overloading of heavy-duty trucks.
  • Oversight: Weak internal safety monitoring systems to track fleet behavior in real-time.

A Dramatic Shift in Safety Data

Following the aggressive implementation of the FRSC’s corrective recommendations, comparative crash data compiled between the first quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026 revealed an unprecedented turnaround in safety performance.

According to verified statistics released by the agency on 26 May 2026, the company’s safety metrics improved across every major indicator:

Safety IndicatorQ1 2025Q1 2026Percentage Reduction
Total Crashes25 cases11 cases56% Drop
Fatal Crashes36% Drop
Injuries Sustained89 persons42 persons52% Drop
Recorded Deaths35 deaths14 deaths60% Drop

A Blueprint for Corporate Fleet Operators

Reacting to the data, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed described the dramatic decline in fatalities as definitive proof that data-driven, institutional collaboration can effectively curb the high rate of commercial vehicle accidents on Nigerian highways.

Mr Mohammed praised the Dangote leadership for opening its logistics arm to external professional scrutiny and swiftly acting on the findings.

The FRSC chief issued an urgent call to other major fleet operators, private haulage firms, and interstate transport companies across the federation to emulate the initiative. He urged them to adopt proactive, audited safety measures to systematically lower accident rates and permanently elevate operational standards on the nation’s road networks.
