Donald Trump has threatened to “obliterate” Iran’s critical infrastructure as a wave of drone and missile strikes targets oil tankers and telecommunications hubs across the Gulf.
In a sharp escalation of rhetoric, the US President warned that Iran’s power plants, oil wells, and water desalination facilities could be targeted if a diplomatic deal is not reached “shortly.” While Mr. Trump claimed that “serious” talks were underway, Tehran’s foreign ministry swiftly denied any negotiations with Washington to end the month-long war.
The threats come as the conflict enters a volatile new phase, with commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the UAE and Saudi Arabia increasingly caught in the crossfire.
Tanker ablaze in Dubai
A Kuwaiti oil tanker carrying two million barrels of crude caught fire while docked in Dubai early on Tuesday. UAE officials have blamed a direct strike from an Iranian drone for the blaze.
Though authorities say the 24-man crew is safe and the fire is now under control, the strike marks a significant breach of security in one of the world’s busiest commercial ports. Shrapnel from separate projectile interceptions also fell near the Al Badia area of the city, injuring four people.
The regional “drone war” has expanded rapidly overnight:
- Sharjah: A drone targeted the administrative building of the Thuraya Telecommunications Company; no injuries were reported.
- Saudi Arabia: Six houses were damaged by debris from intercepted drones.
- Kuwait: The military confirmed it is currently intercepting a “barrage” of drone and missile attacks over its territory.
The ‘Halfway Point’
In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told reporters that the war is “definitely beyond the halfway point.” He later clarified that his assessment referred to the completion of military missions rather than a specific timeline for a ceasefire.
As strikes continue to hit the Iranian capital, causing temporary power blackouts in parts of Tehran, the Iranian government has moved forward with plans to impose a “toll” on all ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz—a move that could spark a global energy crisis if enforced.
Analysis: The ‘Desalination’ Threat
Mr. Trump’s mention of water desalination plants is particularly significant. In the arid Gulf region, these facilities are the primary source of drinking water. Targeting them would represent a move toward “total war,” potentially displacing millions of civilians and creating a humanitarian catastrophe.
The contradictory reports regarding “serious talks” suggest that back-channel diplomacy may be failing. While Washington appears to be using “maximum pressure” to force a deal, Tehran’s public defiance indicates that the Iranian leadership is not yet ready to capitulate, even as its domestic power grid falters under Israeli bombardment.
