Nigeria’s election body promotes over 2,000 staff

Nigeria’s electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has announced the promotion of 2,339 staff members following a nationwide senior staff review. The move, approved during a commission meeting last Thursday, is being framed by officials as a strategic effort to ensure “institutional continuity” and boost morale ahead of upcoming polls.

A reward for service

The promotions span several administrative levels, rewarding merit and years of service across the commission’s various departments:

Directorate Level: 45 Deputy Directors have been elevated to full Directors.

Senior Management: 91 Assistant Directors moved up to Deputy Directors, while 82 Chief Officers were promoted to the rank of Assistant Director.

Intermediate Staff: The bulk of the exercise saw 2,121 officers across lower-to-middle management grades (GL 07–13) receive advancement.

Retirement and Regulations

In a nod to civil service protocols, INEC noted that while 18 of the newly minted Directors will continue in active service, 27 are scheduled for retirement shortly. Under Nigerian public service rules, these “exit promotions” often serve as a recognition of a career’s worth of work before an officer officially bows out.

Looking ahead

The timing of the announcement is significant. As Nigeria prepares for its next cycle of electoral engagements, INEC stated the promotions are intended to sustain “leadership depth.”In a statement, the commission urged the newly promoted officers to maintain “professionalism and integrity”—qualities often under intense scrutiny in the country’s high-stakes political environment.
