NNPC Ltd. Donates CNG Buses to Boost Cleaner Energy in Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has donated 35 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG).

The handover ceremony took place at the NNPC Towers on Monday, as stated in a press release from NNPC Ltd. During the event, Bashir Ojulari, Group CEO of NNPC Ltd., reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s gas aspirations.

Mr. Ojulari explained that this move aligns with NNPC Ltd.’s efforts to promote CNG as a cleaner, cheaper, and sustainable fuel alternative. He also noted that the company has made significant progress in gas supply, infrastructure, distribution, and retail outlets. “I am proud that NNPC Ltd is playing a pivotal role in driving the Federal Government’s gas agenda towards energy transition,” he stated.

Ekperikpe Ekpo, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), remarked that the CNG buses are “not just vehicles, but serve as instruments of economic relief, social equity, and environmental responsibility.” He added that “They signal a future where the ordinary Nigerian can commute safely, affordably, and efficiently.” The Minister described the initiative as a direct reflection of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, calling it a bold step to reduce transportation costs, lessen dependence on petrol, and ensure the utilisation of Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources for the benefit of the people.

Mr. Mumuni Dagazau, Executive Vice President, Downstream, NNPC Ltd, highlighted the significant economic benefits of adopting CNG as a fuel alternative. He noted that it reduces reliance on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) as automotive fuels, leading to substantial cost savings and supporting the growth of the local gas industry. The Executive Vice President, Gas, Power & New Energy, added that NNPC Ltd would continue to lead the way as the CNG commercialisation drive gains momentum.

The Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, Emmanuella Arukwe, stated that through this initiative, NNPC Ltd is “advancing and shaping a new energy future that will purposefully serve people, communities, and the planet.”

Michael Oluwagbemi, Programme Coordinator/CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative, commended NNPC Ltd for its support, describing the company as a “reliable partner” since the initiative’s commencement.
