Nigeria seeks dialogue with Niger Republic amid escalating tensions

Abuja – The Nigerian government has expressed openness to “constructive dialogue” with the military junta in Niger Republic to de-escalate tensions between the two neighbouring countries.

In a statement on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to peace and stability in West Africa, calling for “candid discussions to address mutual concerns” raised by General Abdourahman Tchiani, the leader of the junta.

Tchiani recently accused Nigeria of colluding with France to destabilise his regime, alleging that France was forging an alliance with militant groups in the Lake Chad region to undermine Niger’s security, with Nigeria’s knowledge.

The Nigerian government has refuted these claims as baseless.

However, reports of apprehension among residents in border communities have surfaced amid the escalating diplomatic tensions.

In his statement, Minister Tuggar emphasised Nigeria’s dedication to dialogue and diplomacy as the foundation for resolving regional challenges, while reaffirming the country’s respect for Niger’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He invited the Nigerien leadership to engage in open and constructive dialogue to address mutual concerns and explore confidence-building measures to alleviate the humanitarian impact on border communities.

Tuggar stressed the importance of fostering mutual respect and collaboration between the two nations, highlighting the deep historical and cultural ties that unite them.

He cautioned against baseless accusations that could disrupt regional progress and stability, emphasising that Nigeria would not encourage any actions that could undermine Niger’s security.

The statement concluded by expressing optimism that constructive engagement would lead to a more stable and prosperous future for both nations.
