Foreign Hackers Had Illegal Police Protection, Says Inspector General

Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has revealed that police officers found protecting foreign hackers arrested for cybercrimes were on illegal duty. This comes after the Nigeria Police Force announced the arrest of 130 suspects, including 113 foreign nationals and 17 Nigerian collaborators, linked to high-level cybercrimes and threats to national security.

Mr. Egbetokun confirmed that the involved police officers have been arrested and detained, stating that they were not formally deployed by the police authority and were performing illegal duties. Their unit commanders have disowned them, and they will face consequences.

The Inspector General clarified that police protection is necessary for certain individuals, such as prominent businessmen and employers, due to their significant contribution to the economy and potential impact on unemployment rates. However, he emphasized that police officers attached to individuals without requiring protection are often not formally deployed.

Key Points:

  • Police Officers on Illegal Duty: Arrested for protecting foreign hackers
  • Cybercrime Crackdown: 130 suspects arrested, including 113 foreign nationals and 17 Nigerian collaborators
  • Police Protection: Necessary for certain individuals, but misuse will be addressed
  • Accountability: Police officers found in illegal situations will be traced and commanders held accountable

IGP Egbetokun also addressed the arrest of minors, stating they were not detained for participating in #EndBadGovernance protests but for looting and destroying public infrastructure. He emphasized that protesting is a right, but individuals committing crimes will be held accountable
