US Postal Fees to Impact Nigerians Sending Parcels Abroad

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has announced that all postal shipments from Nigeria to the United States will incur a mandatory prepaid customs duty of $80 or its naira equivalent, effective August 29. The new fee, which applies to all shipments except letters and documents, follows an Executive Order signed by the US government.

In a public notice to its customers, NIPOST explained that the new charges are a result of a recent US policy that suspends duty-free exemptions for postal shipments globally. The agency clarified that the directive, issued under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, is not limited to Nigeria but applies to all designated postal operators worldwide.

NIPOST warned that the new measure would have significant implications for Nigerians sending parcels and goods to family and business partners in the US, potentially causing delays due to stricter protocols by airlines and cargo carriers.

The US policy, which was announced by the Trump administration, targets low-value shipments valued at or under $800, which officials claim are used to evade tariffs and smuggle illicit items. The new rules subject packages to the tariff level of their country of origin or a specific duty ranging from $80 to $200. NIPOST stated it is working with international partners to minimise service disruptions.
