Equatorial Guinea Official Jailed for Embezzlement

Malabo, Equatorial Guinea – A senior government official in Equatorial Guinea, Baltasar Ebang Engonga, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for embezzlement. The conviction comes months after he gained notoriety from leaked sex tapes published online.

The Bioko provincial tribunal found Mr. Engonga, the former head of the national financial investigation agency, guilty of using money claimed for professional travel expenses for personal use. A supreme court official, Hilario Mitogo, confirmed that Mr. Engonga was handed an eight-year sentence and a fine of $220,000.

Mr. Engonga, along with five other senior officials, was accused of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars in the oil-rich Central African state. He had been in detention awaiting trial on the embezzlement charges when the sex tapes, some reportedly filmed in his office, were leaked on social media. The videos led to a wave of online parodies and media attention.
