ACCRA, GHANA – Popular Ghanaian musician Shatta Wale has been detained by authorities in connection with an investigation into his purchase of a luxury car. The yellow Lamborghini was seized earlier this month at the request of the US, which alleges the vehicle is tied to the proceeds of a criminal enterprise.
Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (Eoco) confirmed that Wale, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah, voluntarily entered custody on Wednesday. According to Eoco, the 2019 Lamborghini Urus was identified by the FBI and the US Department of Justice as being linked to a “a $4 million crime” involving a Ghanaian national named Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently serving a prison sentence in the US for fraud.
Wale, one of Ghana’s most well-known musicians, has denied any knowledge of or connection to Amuah. The musician’s management has stated that the detention is related to “tax obligations.” After being questioned, Wale was granted bail of 10 million Ghanaian cedis, though he will remain in custody until the sureties are confirmed.
