ABUJA, NIGERIA – President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to engaging with Nigerians living abroad, recognising their crucial role in national development. Speaking through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, the President assured the diaspora of sustained government efforts to create an enabling environment for their investments, participation, and reintegration into the nation-building process.
The pledge was made during the 2025 National Diaspora Day (NDD) event in Abuja on Thursday, which brought together government officials, diplomats, civil society, and Nigerians from across the globe. As a key highlight of the event aimed at deepening diaspora inclusion, Senator Akume officially unveiled the ‘Home & Abroad Housing Platform’. This initiative is designed to simplify property ownership for Nigerians in the diaspora by mitigating risks and barriers often associated with acquiring homes in Nigeria from overseas, promoting transparency and accountability.
In her welcome remarks, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), lauded the resilience and contributions of the over 20 million Nigerians living outside the country. She noted their invaluable impact through remittances, skills transfer, diplomacy, and innovation. Senator Aniekan Bassey, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations, also emphasised the need for stronger institutions and platforms to fully harness the potential of Nigerian citizens abroad.
