SIM Services Disrupted in Nigeria Due to New Identity Verification Platform

Abuja, Nigeria – Mobile network subscribers across Nigeria are experiencing temporary disruptions to SIM-related services following a directive from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to switch to a new identity verification platform. The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) announced the disruption in a statement on Tuesday, signed by its Chairman, Gbenga Adebayo, and Publicity Secretary, Damian Udeh.

Mr. Adebayo explained that the migration process to the new platform has caused unforeseen technical challenges, impacting the availability of seamless SIM services nationwide. The new platform aims to improve the integrity and efficiency of identity management systems, but its transition has temporarily hindered Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) from offering uninterrupted SIM-related services.

During this period, operators will not be able to process SIM swaps, replacements, new activations, or other related services.

ALTON confirmed that it is working collaboratively with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), NIMC, and other relevant authorities to resolve the integration issues. The association expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and urged subscribers to postpone any non-urgent SIM-related requests until further notice.

Mr. Adebayo assured the public of the industry’s continued commitment to providing secure and high-quality telecommunications services, promising to share timely updates as the situation progresses.
