Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Presidency has moved to quell speculation regarding the status of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume. In a statement issued on Saturday, the Presidency firmly denied circulating rumours that Akume had been replaced.
According to the statement from Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, there has been “no change” in Senator Akume’s position. The statement clarified that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is currently in Saint Lucia, has not made any new appointments.
The Presidency attributed the circulating information about Akume’s replacement to “agents of mischief,” describing the reports as “untrue” and “fabricated.” Nigerians have been advised to disregard the “fake news.”
Senator George Akume was appointed as Secretary to the Government of the Federation by President Tinubu shortly after his inauguration in May 2023. The SGF is a pivotal role in the Nigerian government, responsible for coordinating policies and ensuring the smooth functioning of the country’s executive arm.
