US Mission in Nigeria Issues Security Alert for Abuja

The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security alert advising American citizens to avoid non-essential travel to military and government facilities in the capital, Abuja.

The US Embassy, in a statement released on Monday, said the advisory was due to heightened global security concerns.

The alert restricts all embassy personnel and their families from making non-official visits to Nigerian military sites or other government venues in Abuja at this time.

American citizens in Nigeria are being urged to be vigilant in public areas, particularly places frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials.

The embassy also advised individuals to avoid large gatherings, maintain unpredictable routines, and familiarise themselves with emergency exits in buildings. US nationals are encouraged to review their personal security arrangements and exercise increased caution while in Nigeria.

Despite these new restrictions, the Consular Sections of the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will remain open and operational.

The embassy has directed citizens seeking more information or requiring assistance to visit its official website.
