A senior official from Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) who was abducted earlier this month has been released, police have confirmed.
Daniel Onyishi, a Director at the NDLEA’s Anambra State command, was kidnapped on 12 June in the Awka area of the state.
Police in Anambra State announced on Sunday that Mr Onyishi had been freed and was currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
A police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, said in a statement that the release was secured through a joint effort involving the police and other security agencies, particularly a specialist unit from the NDLEA. The statement did not disclose whether a ransom was paid.
Mr Ikenga added that the state’s Commissioner of Police had informed senior police command about the development and that efforts were underway to apprehend those responsible for the kidnapping.
The abduction of Mr Onyishi had drawn significant public attention, prompting renewed calls for stronger security measures in Anambra State, where kidnapping has been a recurring issue.
