Lokoja, Nigeria – The Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Ododo, has extended warm congratulations to his predecessor, Yahaya Bello, on the occasion of his 50th birthday. Governor Ododo’s tribute described the milestone as a moment for honour and reflection, celebrating a leader whose tenure was marked by “courage, transformation, and lasting impact” across the state and Nigeria.
In his remarks, Governor Ododo recalled that Mr. Bello made history in 2016 as Nigeria’s youngest governor, pioneering a “new generation of leadership” in Kogi politics. “Our leader, Governor Yahaya Bello, came as the pathfinder of the future,” Governor Ododo stated, adding that Mr. Bello “built a system where sons and daughters of anybody could aspire for positions of influence.” He cited himself as a “living testament” to this philosophy, now serving as the state’s Chief Servant.
Governor Ododo highlighted Mr. Bello’s administration for shattering traditional political barriers by providing opportunities for youth and women across all levels of local government, irrespective of their social standing or background. He emphasised that the former governor focused on “building men and women of value” and elevating individuals from diverse backgrounds into public service. Mr. Bello’s governance philosophy, according to his successor, was to create a “bridge for ordinary people to access opportunities,” ensuring that his appointees remained accessible to the public in their subsequent roles.
The current governor acknowledged that Mr. Bello’s achievements in civil service reform, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and security laid a crucial foundation that continues to guide the present administration. Governor Ododo pointed to significant investments, including “over 30% of the state’s annual budget invested in education,” and the establishment of “two new universities within four years.” He also noted Mr. Bello’s commitment to promoting women in leadership through a “35% affirmative action” policy, which Governor Ododo described as a “signature of inclusive governance” that continues to set a standard for Kogi State.
Governor Ododo asserted that his own emergence as governor is a direct testament to Mr. Bello’s dedication to nurturing new generations of leaders, stressing that his predecessor’s legacy is evident in the current administration’s performance. Governor Ododo concluded by praying for Mr. Bello’s continued guidance in his future endeavours.
