Nigeria’s President Tinubu to Address Parliament for Democracy Day

Abuja, Nigeria – Nigerian President Bola Tinubu will deliver his annual Democracy Day address directly from a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, cancelling a previously scheduled nationwide broadcast.

The change in plans for the commemoration of Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day anniversary was confirmed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, who cited President Tinubu’s scheduled attendance at the parliamentary session.

“Due to President Bola Tinubu scheduled attendance at the National Assembly Joint Session, the Presidential National Broadcast on June 12 has been cancelled. President Tinubu will deliver his address from the National Assembly,” Mr. Imohiosen stated.

Other activities planned for the day are expected to proceed as scheduled. However, the traditional military parade, which usually marks the Democracy Day celebration, has also been cancelled, though no official reason was given for this specific change.

A revised schedule of events, issued by the Inter-Ministerial Committee, confirmed that President Tinubu will participate in the special joint session of the National Assembly at 12 noon (11:00 GMT). A public lecture on “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms” is also slated for 4 p.m. (15:00 GMT) at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

Nigeria observes Democracy Day on June 12 to commemorate the annulled 1993 presidential election, widely considered the freest and fairest in the country’s history, which was won by MKO Abiola.
