Armed Robber Jailed for 120 Years Over Pharmacy Murder in Kumasi

Notorious armed robber sentenced to 120 years and life imprisonment for murder and robbery in Kumasi

A court in Kumasi, Ghana, has handed down a lengthy prison sentence to a 36-year-old armed robber for a violent robbery and the subsequent murder of a pharmacist.

Dominic Afriyie was sentenced to 120 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for two counts of robbery and a life sentence for murder. The conviction at the High Court in Kumasi, presided over by Justice Abdul Razak, has been hailed by the Ashanti Regional Police Command as a significant step in combating violent crime in the region.

According to a police statement, Afriyie, also known as GH, attacked the home of Michael Dela Agbo Klu, a 43-year-old pharmacist and building contractor, in Atasemanso, Kumasi, on 20th November 2021. Armed with a gun, Afriyie is said to have stolen two mobile phones, a laptop, and 1,500 Ghanaian Cedis in cash before fatally shooting Mr Klu.

Police further stated that on 30th December 2021, intelligence led them to a planned robbery in the same area. A swift operation resulted in the arrest of Afriyie and three other men in a Toyota Corolla vehicle in the early hours of 31st December 2021. Two pistols and two single-barrelled shotguns were recovered from the vehicle.

Investigations determined that Afriyie acted alone in the robbery and murder of Mr Klu. Despite entering a plea of not guilty, a jury of seven and Justice Razak found him guilty following a full trial.

In a statement, the Ashanti Regional Police Command informed the public of the sentencing, adding that Afriyie received 120 years for two robbery charges and a life sentence for the murder.
