A Nigerian entertainer, Obinna Simon, has launched a strong critique of the current leadership of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), accusing it of failing to address the pressing needs of its residents, particularly women and young people.
Speaking on Wednesday as he declared his candidacy for the council’s chairmanship under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Mr. Simon asserted that the current administration has an “absence of presence” across the council area and voiced deep concern over the state of essential services like food, housing, and healthcare. He specifically highlighted the dire cost of living for low-income earners.

Mr. Simon, known by his stage name MC Tagwaye, recently left the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the party’s deviation from its original mission and its failure to prioritise the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. He stated that he could no longer associate with a party whose policies he believes have perpetuated hardship.
Announcing his political ambition three months after Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) scheduled the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections for February 21st, 2026, Mr. Simon presented his vision for AMAC. He pledged to leverage his experience as an entertainer, businessman, politician, and youth leader to drive progress, inclusivity, and sustainable development within the council.

Key proposals outlined in his declaration speech include establishing programmes to equip young people with necessary skills, creating cottage industries to stimulate economic growth and job creation, and championing causes to uplift marginalised communities. He also promised to advocate for policies addressing challenges in healthcare, education, affordable housing, and infrastructure, while committing to honesty, transparency, and accountability in governance.
Mr. Simon called on all AMAC citizens to join him in this political journey, seeking their support, votes, and prayers to build a brighter future for the community. His decision to contest under the SDP banner marks a significant shift in his political affiliation and sets the stage for a potentially dynamic electoral contest in 2026.
