Nigerian Electoral Body Addresses “Misleading Narratives” Over Warri Ward Changes

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a statement refuting what it describes as “misleading narratives” surrounding the proposed redrawing of electoral wards in the Warri Federal Constituency of Delta State, South- South Nigeria.

The delineation follows a Supreme Court judgment delivered in December 2022.

In a press release on Thursday, INEC explained that it has been engaged in extensive consultations with key stakeholders in the Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South West Local Government Areas since February 2023. This process, which ran until July 2024, involved fieldwork in all communities within the three local government areas and culminated in a draft report.

INEC further stated that it held another consultation with stakeholders in Warri last week, on Friday, April 4th, 2025. During this meeting, copies of the draft report on the proposed ward delineation were presented to representatives of all parties involved, providing them with an opportunity to raise any concerns they might have. The electoral body emphasized that the overarching aim is to reach an amicable agreement endorsed by all parties.

Therefore, INEC clarified that, contrary to ongoing speculation, the Commission has not yet made a final decision on the delineation of wards within the Warri Federal Constituency.

INEC has urged representatives of the various stakeholders to submit their observations on the draft report, which will serve as the basis for further engagement on the matter.

In the meantime, the electoral commission appealed to all stakeholders in the constituency to avoid any actions that could potentially threaten the peace and security of the area. INEC reiterated its commitment to operating based on fairness, equity, the rule of law, and in full consultation with all relevant parties.
