Eid al-Fitr Declared for Sunday in Nigeria After Moon Sighting

Muslims in Nigeria will celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Sunday, March 30th, after the sighting of the crescent moon, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced.

The announcement, made late on Saturday, followed reports of the new moon being sighted in various locations across the country.

The Sultan, who is also the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), confirmed that “With the sighting of the moon, Sunday, March 30, 2025, will be the 1st of Shawwal 1446 AH, marking the day for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.”

This declaration brings to an end the month of Ramadan, during which Muslims around the world abstain from food and drink from dawn till dusk.

The Sultan congratulated Muslims on the successful completion of their fast and urged them to continue practicing the virtues of patience, piety, and charity that are emphasised during the holy month, beyond the Eid celebrations.

This announcement comes shortly after Saudi Arabia also confirmed that the crescent moon had been sighted, leading to the declaration of Eid al-Fitr on Sunday in the kingdom.

Earlier on Saturday, there had been some uncertainty in Nigeria, with an initial announcement from the NSCIA stating that the moon had not been sighted and that fasting might continue on Sunday. However, this was later updated following the confirmed sightings.
