Nigeria Electricity Generation Reaches Record High

Nigeria has recorded its highest ever electricity generation, at 5,801 megawatts, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced.

The peak was reached on Tuesday evening, according to TCN head Sule Abdulaziz, who spoke at the State House in Abuja. He said the TCN successfully transmitted the power to distribution centres across the country.

“For the first time in our nation’s history, the power sector recorded a new and unprecedented peak generation of 5,801.84 megawatts of electricity on March 4, 2025, at 21:15 hours,” Mr Abdulaziz said.

He attributed the achievement to the “hard work and dedication” of engineers in the generation, transmission, and distribution companies.

Despite this record, Nigerians frequently experience power outages.

The Nigerian government privatised power generation and distribution companies in 2013, while retaining ownership of the TCN.

Mr Abdulaziz highlighted completed and ongoing TCN transmission projects, stating the company’s evacuation capacity is currently 8,500MW and is expected to reach 10,000MW within two years.

He detailed investments in new transformers, substations, and transmission lines, including projects funded by the World Bank, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the African Development Bank (AFDB). He also noted the installation of mobile substations as part of the Siemens project.

Mr Abdulaziz said these projects have significantly increased the TCN’s capacity and reduced grid disturbances. He also mentioned the development of a system to manage grid stability in the absence of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, and the digitisation of all substations.

He added that the TCN has built up a substantial stockpile of transmission equipment to reduce downtime and improve efficiency.
