Kogi State is poised to receive a significant boost in funding for education and healthcare, courtesy of a $500m World Bank-assisted fund. The state’s share of the fund stands at $26.2m, which will be utilized to enhance human capital development.
According to Asiwaju Idris, Commissioner for Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning, the World Bank-assisted programme under the HOPE-GOV initiative aims to strengthen basic education and primary healthcare services in the state. Idris emphasized that education and healthcare are critical pillars for building a productive and resilient society.
The HOPE-GOV initiative is expected to enhance fiscal transparency, improve budget credibility, and ensure accountability in the use of funds. Habibat Tijani, State Accountant General and World Bank Fiscal Focal Person, noted that the initiative will increase financing for education and healthcare, leading to better recruitment and performance of teachers and healthcare workers.
The Commissioner for Education, Wemi Jones, praised the initiative, highlighting the present administration’s commitment to repositioning the education sector. Similarly, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams, expressed optimism that the HOPE-GOV initiative will revolutionize healthcare service delivery in the state.
