A Nigerian civil society organization has strongly condemned the recent obstruction of Peter Obi’s convoy in Benue State, warning of rising political intolerance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) described the incident as a “dangerous affront” to Nigeria’s democratic norms.
Mr. Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), was traveling along the Makurdi–Gboko road on Tuesday to visit communities in Yelwata affected by recent violence when youth groups blocked his motorcade.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident and announced that 46 suspects have been arrested in connection with the roadblock
