Nigeria’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has disavowed a gathering in Calabar, Cross River State, claiming it was its South-South Zonal Congress. In a statement, the party’s National Publicity Secretary said the event was not official. “The PDP states in clear terms that it has not conducted its South-South Zonal Congress neither is it in any way involved in the said gathering in Calabar,” the statement read.
The PDP explained that the congress had been postponed allowing for broader consultations. It cited its constitution, stating that the National Working Committee had the power to postpone the congress, originally scheduled for 22 February.
The party urged members, stakeholders, the electoral commission, security agencies and the media to disregard the Calabar gathering. It reiterated that no South-South Zonal Congress had taken place and that a new date would be announced through official channels.
The PDP thanked its governors, leaders, stakeholders and members in the South-South region for their continued support.
