The Nigerian government has announced it will work with the Kaduna State government to provide skills training and reintegration programmes for minors freed after being involved in the EndBadGovernance protests.
Humanitarian Affairs Minister, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, made the announcement during a visit to Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani. He emphasised the government’s commitment to not only freeing the minors, but also equipping them for the future through vocational training and starter packs. “Their tomorrow will be better than their yesterday,” he said.
Professor Yilwatda praised Governor Sani’s leadership and commitment to the welfare of the young people, highlighting the state’s efforts in providing counselling, education and skills training. He also acknowledged the support from UNICEF and other development partners.
Governor Sani said the minors had received psychosocial therapy and were being supported in schools and businesses. He added that the state was ready to partner with the federal ministry on skills provision and expanding financial inclusion for vulnerable people in rural areas. He stated that the state has opened accounts for 2.2 million vulnerable persons and hoped to reach 3.5 million.
The minors were handed over to state governments in December 2024 by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
