The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the Federal Government’s approval of a 50% increase in telecom tariffs, describing it as an unjust burden on citizens already grappling with economic challenges.
In a statement, NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed concern over the timing of the hike, citing rising inflation and declining purchasing power. Ajaero noted that telecommunication services have become a basic necessity, with the average Nigerian worker spending approximately 10% of their income on telecom charges.
The NLC president criticized the government for fast-tracking the tariff approval within a month, while taking nearly a year to implement the revised minimum wage. This disparity, Ajaero argued, underscores the government’s bias towards corporate interests over citizens’ welfare.
The NLC has urged Nigerians to reject the tariff hike and prepare for collective action, including a possible nationwide boycott of telecommunication services. Ajaero emphasized that the NLC is not opposed to a tariff review but disagrees with the approved rate of increase.
