The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disputed claims of a national grid collapse, describing them as inaccurate. According to TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, Saturday’s power outage was caused by the tripping of two transmission lines, which affected bulk power supply to the Lagos area.
The affected lines were the Osogbo-Ihovour and Benin-Omotosho lines, which tripped at approximately 1:41 pm. Although the incidents resulted in a drop in power generation from 4,335.63 Megawatts (MW) to 2,573.23 MW, Ms Mbah clarified that the grid did not experience a collapse.
The outage impacted several power plants, including Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras. However, all have been restored except for the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line, which is still under repair.
TCN has reassured the public that it is working to build a more robust transmission grid, despite ongoing challenges. The company has also urged caution against spreading misinformation, emphasizing the importance of accurate and verifiable facts.
