50 Suspects Arrested in Abuja for Theft, Vandalism of Public Property

Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested 50 suspects for allegedly stealing streetlights, manhole covers, and other items in Abuja. The arrests were made in collaboration with other security agencies during raids at hotspots in Kabusa, Garki, Mabushi, and Wuse.

The suspects, who were paraded by the police on Monday, are accused of being part of an organized network that vandalizes public installations and sells them to scrap dealers. Commissioner of Police Tunji Disu said the suspects were found with a range of stolen items, including:

  • 25 manhole covers
  • Five solar streetlights
  • 15 streetlight poles
  • Several galvanized poles used in flyover construction
  • High-voltage AEDC cables
  • Two locally made pistols

Additional items recovered from the suspects include 13 large solar panels, seven barrels of diesel, iron cutting tools, and several other exhibits.

The police commissioner emphasized that the FCT Police Command operates a zero-tolerance policy towards vandalism and theft that undermine public infrastructure and safety.
