President Bola Tinubu has written to the Senate, seeking confirmation of Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede’s appointment as the substantive Chief of Army Staff. This move follows Oluyede’s appointment as Acting Chief of Army Staff on October 30, after the illness of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who later passed away on November 5.
According to Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the President is confident in Oluyede’s leadership qualities, professional integrity, and experience to lead the army and ensure national security and stability.
General Oluyede has had a distinguished military career, serving as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army. He has also held various command positions, including Platoon Commander, Company Commander, and Commandant of the Amphibious Training School. His military honours include the Corps Medal of Honour, the Grand Service Star, and the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award.
The Senate’s confirmation of General Oluyede’s appointment is expected to be a formality, given his impressive military credentials.
