Nigeria’s South-East: IPOB Denies Ordering Sit-At-Home Protest

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a statement urging residents of South-East Nigeria to disregard any calls for a sit-at-home protest on October 21 and 22. This comes after a video and voice notes circulated on social media, warning residents to stay indoors on those days, with threats against those who fail to comply.

The supposed sit-at-home order has caused panic and chaos in Anambra, leading to the rescheduling of court cases and school activities. However, IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, denies that the group issued the order, instead attributing it to “criminal elements and Finland-based infiltrators”.

Powerful emphasized that IPOB has suspended its sit-at-home protests and that anyone declaring otherwise is a “criminal element” that should be ignored. He also encouraged residents to go about their normal business, assuring that IPOB does not want to create unnecessary panic.

This development highlights the ongoing tensions in South-East Nigeria, where IPOB and other separatist groups have been advocating for the restoration of the defunct Republic of Biafra. The group’s leadership has been working to distance itself from violent or illegal activities, emphasizing its commitment to peaceful protest.
